Overview:
Microsoft applications require periodic confirmation that you are really you. To do that, you need to use a separate authentication method, typically one on your phone to get through verification prompts.
Instructions:
- From a computer, please go to: https://aka.ms/mfasetup.
- If you're prompted to sign in, use your normal City of Hayward email and password. Otherwise, please proceed to the next step.
- You will see a notification requesting more information for your account, select Next.

- At this point, you may follow the on-screen instructions to register with the Microsoft Authenticator app, but we highly recommend to get text messages first and foremost. To do so, select the I want to set up a different method link in the bottom left of the sign up box.

- From the drop down, select Phone.

- Select Confirm.

- Type in your cell phone number with NO DASHES and then choose Next. You may opt to choose Text me a code or Call me at this step.

- You will receive a text message or a phone call on your phone depending on your choice above.
- If you chose text, enter the 6-digit code from the text message into the prompt on your computer and then continue.
- If you chose call, answer the phone call and press # in the call.
- After your phone is registered, you will now need to setup another authentication method (2 is the requirement!). To do so, follow the on-screen instructions for the Microsoft Authenticator app OR you can repeat steps 4-6 but choose a different method (call to office phone or alternative non-City email).
- When you're finished, you'll see a screen similar to below depending on your choices. When finished, select Done and you're all set! You may close out of the window and continue work.
